In extraordinarily simple terms, there are three main strategies used. You need to be agile enough to hop between strategies almost instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves building a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at a minimum as deep as you are able to manage, to barricade in your opponent’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most acceptable procedure at the begining of the game. You can assemble the wall anywhere inbetween your 11-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This involves locking your home board as quick as possible while keeping your opposer on the bar. e.g., if your competitor rolls an early 2 and moves one checker from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a 5-5, you can play 6/1 six/one eight/three eight/three. Your opposer is then in big-time calamity due to the fact that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have locked half your home board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have two or more pieces in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor is a point filled by at a minimum two of your pieces.) It should be used when you are extremely behind as it much improves your opportunities. The best places for anchors are close to your competitor’s lower points and also on abutting points or with a single point in between. Timing is critical for an effectual backgame: besides, there is no reason having two nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then required to dismantle this straight away, while your opposer is moving their checkers home, owing to the fact that you don’t have any other spare checkers to shift! In this case, it is more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you are able to maintain your position up till your challenger gives you a chance to hit, so it can be a good idea to attempt and get your opposer to get them in this case!
