In exceptionally simple terms, there are three basic tactics used. You need to be agile enough to switch tactics quickly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of building a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as thick as you are able to achieve, to block in the competitor’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most suitable strategy at the begining of the game. You can assemble the wall anyplace between your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This is comprised of locking your home board as fast as possible while keeping your opposer on the bar. For example, if your opposer rolls an early 2 and moves one checker from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then roll a five-five, you can play six/one 6/1 8/3 eight/three. Your competitor is now in big-time trouble considering that they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have two or more anchors in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor is a position consisting of at least two of your pieces.) It should be played when you are extremely behind as it greatly improves your circumstances. The best locations for anchor spots are close to your competitor’s smaller points and either on adjoining points or with a single point in between. Timing is essential for an effectual backgame: besides, there’s no point having two nice anchors and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then required to dismantle this straight away, while your competitor is getting their pieces home, owing to the fact that you don’t have other spare checkers to shift! In this situation, it is better to have pieces on the bar so that you might preserve your position up till your competitor provides you an opportunity to hit, so it will be a wonderful idea to try and get your challenger to hit them in this case!
