In exceptionally general terms, there are three chief techniques employed. You need to be able to hop between game plans quickly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of creating a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you might manage, to block in your opponent’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable strategy at the begining of the match. You can create the wall anyplace within your 11-point and your two-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the match advances.

The Blitz

This is comprised of locking your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your competitor on the bar. For example, if your competitor tosses an early 2 and shifts one checker from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then roll a five-five, you are able to play six/one 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your opposer is then in big-time calamity due to the fact that they have two pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inner board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have two or higher pieces in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor is a point consisting of at least two of your pieces.) It would be played when you are decidedly behind as it greatly improves your chances. The best areas for anchor spots are near your opponent’s smaller points and either on adjacent points or with one point in between. Timing is integral for an effectual backgame: after all, there is no point having 2 nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to dismantle this straight away, while your competitor is getting their checkers home, taking into account that you don’t have any other spare pieces to move! In this situation, it’s better to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to maintain your position up till your competitor provides you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a great idea to try and get your opposer to get them in this case!
