In astonishingly simple terms, there are 3 chief tactics used. You must be able to hop between tactics instantly as the course of the match unfolds.
The Blockade
This is composed of creating a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at least as deep as you can manage, to lock in your opponent’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most adequate strategy at the begining of the match. You can create the wall anywhere between your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the game continues.
The Blitz
This consists of closing your home board as fast as as you can while keeping your opposer on the bar. i.e., if your opposer rolls an early two and shifts one piece from your one-point to your three-point and you then toss a 5-5, you are able to play 6/1 six/one 8/3 eight/three. Your challenger is now in big-time calamity because they have two checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!
The Backgame
This strategy is where you have 2 or more pieces in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor is a point consisting of at a minimum two of your pieces.) It would be employed when you are decidedly behind as this plan greatly improves your circumstances. The best places for anchor spots are near your competitor’s smaller points and either on adjacent points or with a single point in between. Timing is critical for a competent backgame: at the end of the day, there is no reason having 2 nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break apart this straight away, while your competitor is shifting their pieces home, considering that you don’t have any other spare checkers to move! In this situation, it is more tolerable to have pieces on the bar so that you might maintain your position up till your opponent gives you a chance to hit, so it can be a good idea to try and get your competitor to hit them in this situation!
