In extraordinarily simple terms, there are 3 fundamental game plans used. You must be able to hop between game plans quickly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of building a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at least as thick as you might manage, to barricade in the opponent’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most adequate strategy at the start of the game. You can create the wall anyplace within your 11-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This involves locking your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. e.g., if your opponent tosses an early two and moves one piece from your one-point to your 3-point and you then toss a 5-5, you are able to play six/one 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your competitor is then in serious trouble taking into account that they have two pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have two or higher anchors in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor spot is a point consisting of at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It must be played when you are decidedly behind as it much improves your circumstances. The best areas for anchor spots are towards your opponent’s lower points and also on adjacent points or with one point in between. Timing is crucial for a powerful backgame: besides, there is no reason having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break down this straight away, while your competitor is shifting their pieces home, considering that you don’t have any other additional checkers to move! In this case, it’s more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position up till your opposer provides you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a good idea to try and get your opponent to hit them in this situation!
