In exceptionally simple terms, there are three general plans used. You want to be able to hop between strategies quickly as the action of the match unfolds.
The Blockade
This is composed of creating a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you are able to achieve, to barricade in your competitor’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most adequate tactic at the start of the game. You can create the wall anywhere between your eleven-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the game advances.
The Blitz
This is comprised of locking your home board as fast as as you can while keeping your competitor on the bar. For example, if your opponent rolls an early two and shifts one checker from your one-point to your 3-point and you then roll a five-five, you can play 6/1 six/one 8/3 8/3. Your competitor is now in serious dire straits considering that they have two pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!
The Backgame
This tactic is where you have 2 or more anchors in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor is a point consisting of at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It needs to be used when you are significantly behind as this strategy much improves your chances. The strongest areas for anchors are near your opponent’s lower points and either on abutting points or with one point separating them. Timing is critical for a powerful backgame: besides, there’s no point having two nice anchors and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break up this straight away, while your opponent is shifting their pieces home, because you do not have any other additional pieces to shift! In this case, it is more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position up till your opposer provides you an opportunity to hit, so it can be a good idea to attempt and get your opponent to hit them in this situation!
