In very simple terms, there are three basic techniques employed. You want to be agile enough to hop between tactics instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of creating a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you might manage, to barricade in the competitor’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most adequate course of action at the begining of the game. You can create the wall anywhere within your eleven-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the match continues.

The Blitz

This is composed of closing your home board as quick as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. e.g., if your challenger rolls an early two and shifts one piece from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a 5-5, you are able to play 6/1 6/1 8/3 eight/three. Your competitor is now in serious difficulty because they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have locked half your home board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have two or more anchors in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor is a point occupied by at least two of your pieces.) It must be employed when you are significantly behind as this strategy greatly improves your circumstances. The strongest places for anchors are close to your competitor’s smaller points and also on adjacent points or with one point in between. Timing is critical for a powerful backgame: besides, there’s no point having 2 nice anchors and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then required to dismantle this right away, while your opponent is shifting their checkers home, because you do not have other additional pieces to shift! In this case, it’s more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you might preserve your position up until your opposer gives you a chance to hit, so it can be an excellent idea to try and get your competitor to get them in this situation!
