In astonishingly general terms, there are three main techniques used. You need to be able to hop between strategies instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of assembling a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at least as thick as you are able to manage, to barricade in your competitor’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most acceptable tactic at the start of the game. You can build the wall anyplace within your 11-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the game progresses.

The Blitz

This is composed of locking your home board as quick as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. e.g., if your challenger tosses an early two and shifts one piece from your one-point to your 3-point and you then roll a five-five, you will be able to play six/one 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your competitor is now in big-time trouble since they have two checkers on the bar and you have locked half your home board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have 2 or higher checkers in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a position consisting of at a minimum 2 of your checkers.) It would be played when you are significantly behind as it much improves your chances. The better locations for anchors are near your opponent’s lower points and also on adjoining points or with one point separating them. Timing is integral for an effectual backgame: at the end of the day, there’s no point having 2 nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break down this right away, while your opposer is getting their pieces home, considering that you don’t have any other spare checkers to move! In this situation, it’s more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you might preserve your position until your competitor provides you an opportunity to hit, so it can be a great idea to attempt and get your challenger to hit them in this situation!
