In exceptionally simple terms, there are 3 general tactics employed. You must be agile enough to switch strategies quickly as the action of the game unfolds.
The Blockade
This is composed of creating a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you are able to achieve, to barricade in your opponent’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most acceptable procedure at the begining of the match. You can build the wall anyplace between your 11-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the game advances.
The Blitz
This consists of locking your home board as fast as as you can while keeping your competitor on the bar. i.e., if your competitor tosses an early two and shifts one checker from your one-point to your 3-point and you then roll a 5-5, you can play 6/1 six/one 8/3 eight/three. Your challenger is now in big-time difficulty taking into account that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!
The Backgame
This course of action is where you have two or higher checkers in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor is a point consisting of at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It would be played when you are decidedly behind as it greatly improves your circumstances. The best locations for anchors are towards your opponent’s lower points and also on adjoining points or with a single point in between. Timing is integral for a competent backgame: besides, there is no point having two nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then required to break up this straight away, while your opponent is getting their checkers home, seeing that you don’t have any other spare pieces to move! In this situation, it is more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to maintain your position until your opposer provides you a chance to hit, so it will be a good idea to attempt and get your competitor to hit them in this case!
