In very simple terms, there are 3 general game plans used. You want to be able to hop between techniques instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves assembling a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you are able to manage, to block in your opponent’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most acceptable strategy at the begining of the game. You can assemble the wall anyplace between your 11-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the match advances.

The Blitz

This is comprised of locking your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your competitor on the bar. e.g., if your opponent rolls an early 2 and moves one checker from your one-point to your 3-point and you then roll a five-five, you are able to play six/one six/one eight/three eight/three. Your competitor is now in serious difficulty since they have two pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have two or higher pieces in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a point consisting of at least 2 of your checkers.) It should be employed when you are significantly behind as it greatly improves your chances. The best locations for anchors are close to your opponent’s smaller points and either on adjacent points or with one point in between. Timing is essential for a competent backgame: after all, there is no reason having 2 nice anchors and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break up this right away, while your competitor is moving their checkers home, taking into account that you don’t have any other additional checkers to shift! In this case, it’s better to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to maintain your position until your opponent gives you an opportunity to hit, so it will be a great idea to attempt and get your opponent to hit them in this case!
