In astonishingly simple terms, there are 3 general game plans used. You must be agile enough to switch game plans instantly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves creating a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you are able to manage, to block in the opponent’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable course of action at the start of the game. You can build the wall anyplace between your eleven-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the game progresses.

The Blitz

This involves locking your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. i.e., if your opponent rolls an early 2 and shifts one piece from your 1-point to your three-point and you then roll a five-five, you can play 6/1 6/1 8/3 eight/three. Your opponent is then in big-time trouble taking into account that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have two or more anchors in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a point consisting of at a minimum two of your checkers.) It needs to be employed when you are decidedly behind as it greatly improves your circumstances. The better areas for anchors are close to your opponent’s lower points and either on abutting points or with one point separating them. Timing is essential for a competent backgame: besides, there’s no reason having 2 nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break apart this right away, while your challenger is getting their pieces home, taking into account that you do not have other spare pieces to shift! In this case, it is better to have pieces on the bar so that you can preserve your position up until your challenger provides you a chance to hit, so it will be a good idea to try and get your competitor to get them in this case!
