In very simple terms, there are 3 general plans employed. You need to be agile enough to switch techniques quickly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of building a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you might achieve, to lock in the opponent’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most acceptable tactic at the start of the match. You can assemble the wall anyplace inbetween your eleven-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This is composed of locking your home board as fast as as you can while keeping your challenger on the bar. For example, if your challenger rolls an early 2 and moves one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you will be able to play 6/1 six/one eight/three eight/three. Your competitor is now in big-time calamity due to the fact that they have two pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have 2 or more pieces in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor is a point consisting of at a minimum two of your pieces.) It must be employed when you are significantly behind as this action much improves your opportunities. The best locations for anchor spots are towards your opponent’s lower points and either on adjacent points or with a single point in between. Timing is integral for a powerful backgame: besides, there is no reason having two nice anchors and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break up this right away, while your opponent is getting their pieces home, considering that you do not have any other extra checkers to shift! In this case, it is more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position up until your opposer provides you an opportunity to hit, so it can be an excellent idea to try and get your opposer to hit them in this situation!
