In extraordinarily general terms, there are three fundamental tactics employed. You need to be agile enough to hop between game plans quickly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of creating a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at least as deep as you can manage, to barricade in your opponent’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable course of action at the begining of the game. You can create the wall anyplace inbetween your eleven-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the match progresses.

The Blitz

This consists of closing your home board as fast as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. e.g., if your challenger tosses an early 2 and moves one checker from your one-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you are able to play six/one six/one eight/three 8/3. Your competitor is then in serious difficulty because they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have locked half your home board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have two or more pieces in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor is a position filled by at a minimum 2 of your checkers.) It should be played when you are significantly behind as this strategy much improves your chances. The better places for anchors are close to your opponent’s lower points and either on adjacent points or with a single point separating them. Timing is essential for a powerful backgame: after all, there is no reason having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then forced to dismantle this right away, while your opponent is shifting their pieces home, taking into account that you don’t have any other extra pieces to move! In this situation, it’s better to have pieces on the bar so that you can maintain your position up until your opposer gives you a chance to hit, so it will be an excellent idea to try and get your opposer to get them in this case!
