In astonishingly general terms, there are three main strategies employed. You must be agile enough to switch tactics quickly as the course of the game unfolds.
The Blockade
This is comprised of building a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at least as thick as you can manage, to barricade in the competitor’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable procedure at the begining of the game. You can build the wall anyplace inbetween your 11-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the match progresses.
The Blitz
This is composed of closing your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your opposer on the bar. e.g., if your competitor rolls an early two and shifts one checker from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then toss a 5-5, you can play six/one six/one 8/3 eight/three. Your competitor is then in big-time calamity due to the fact that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!
The Backgame
This tactic is where you have 2 or higher checkers in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor is a point occupied by at least two of your pieces.) It needs to be played when you are significantly behind as it much improves your circumstances. The strongest places for anchors are towards your competitor’s lower points and also on adjoining points or with one point separating them. Timing is critical for a competent backgame: at the end of the day, there’s no reason having 2 nice anchors and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break up this straight away, while your opposer is moving their pieces home, considering that you do not have any other extra pieces to shift! In this case, it is better to have pieces on the bar so that you might maintain your position up till your competitor gives you a chance to hit, so it will be an excellent idea to attempt and get your challenger to get them in this situation!
