In exceptionally simple terms, there are three main game plans employed. You need to be able to hop between strategies almost instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of creating a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you are able to manage, to barricade in your opponent’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable strategy at the begining of the game. You can assemble the wall anywhere between your eleven-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the game progresses.

The Blitz

This is comprised of locking your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your opponent on the bar. i.e., if your challenger tosses an early 2 and shifts one checker from your 1-point to your three-point and you then roll a 5-5, you are able to play six/one six/one 8/3 eight/three. Your opponent is then in big-time trouble due to the fact that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have two or higher pieces in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a position occupied by at a minimum two of your pieces.) It should be played when you are decidedly behind as this action much improves your opportunities. The better locations for anchor spots are towards your competitor’s lower points and also on adjacent points or with a single point in between. Timing is essential for a competent backgame: besides, there’s no point having 2 nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to break up this right away, while your competitor is moving their pieces home, considering that you don’t have other spare pieces to move! In this case, it’s more tolerable to have pieces on the bar so that you might maintain your position until your opposer gives you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a great idea to try and get your opposer to hit them in this situation!
