In extraordinarily general terms, there are 3 chief strategies employed. You must be able to hop between strategies quickly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves assembling a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you can achieve, to lock in your opponent’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most acceptable procedure at the start of the game. You can assemble the wall anywhere inbetween your 11-point and your 2-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the match continues.

The Blitz

This involves closing your home board as quick as possible while keeping your opponent on the bar. e.g., if your competitor tosses an early two and shifts one checker from your one-point to your three-point and you then roll a 5-5, you are able to play six/one six/one 8/3 8/3. Your opponent is then in big-time calamity since they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have two or more checkers in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a point consisting of at least two of your checkers.) It would be played when you are extremely behind as it much improves your circumstances. The best locations for anchor spots are near your opponent’s lower points and either on adjacent points or with one point separating them. Timing is critical for a competent backgame: at the end of the day, there’s no point having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break down this right away, while your opposer is shifting their checkers home, seeing that you do not have any other additional checkers to shift! In this situation, it’s better to have pieces on the bar so that you might preserve your position up until your challenger gives you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a wonderful idea to try and get your competitor to get them in this situation!
