In very general terms, there are three fundamental tactics employed. You must be agile enough to switch game plans instantly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of assembling a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at least as deep as you can manage, to block in the opponent’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most suitable strategy at the begining of the game. You can create the wall anyplace within your eleven-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This involves closing your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your competitor on the bar. i.e., if your opposer tosses an early two and moves one checker from your 1-point to your three-point and you then roll a five-five, you are able to play 6/1 6/1 8/3 8/3. Your opponent is then in big-time trouble taking into account that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have 2 or more pieces in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor is a point consisting of at least two of your checkers.) It must be used when you are extremely behind as this action greatly improves your chances. The best locations for anchor spots are towards your opponent’s lower points and either on adjoining points or with a single point separating them. Timing is integral for an effectual backgame: besides, there’s no point having two nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break apart this right away, while your competitor is moving their pieces home, owing to the fact that you don’t have any other spare pieces to shift! In this case, it is more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you can preserve your position up until your competitor provides you a chance to hit, so it may be an excellent idea to try and get your opponent to hit them in this situation!
