In extraordinarily general terms, there are three chief plans employed. You want to be able to hop between tactics instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of building a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you might manage, to barricade in your competitor’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most adequate tactic at the start of the match. You can build the wall anywhere within your eleven-point and your two-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the match progresses.

The Blitz

This is comprised of locking your home board as quick as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. i.e., if your challenger tosses an early two and moves one checker from your one-point to your three-point and you then toss a five-five, you will be able to play six/one 6/1 eight/three 8/3. Your opposer is now in serious trouble because they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have two or higher checkers in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor is a position consisting of at least 2 of your pieces.) It must be employed when you are decidedly behind as it much improves your opportunities. The best locations for anchor spots are close to your opponent’s lower points and either on abutting points or with a single point separating them. Timing is critical for a powerful backgame: after all, there is no point having 2 nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break up this straight away, while your competitor is shifting their checkers home, considering that you don’t have any other extra checkers to move! In this situation, it’s better to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to maintain your position up till your challenger provides you an opportunity to hit, so it can be a great idea to try and get your opposer to get them in this case!
