In astonishingly simple terms, there are 3 basic game plans used. You must be able to switch techniques quickly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of building a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at least as deep as you are able to manage, to block in the opponent’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most adequate course of action at the start of the match. You can assemble the wall anyplace between your 11-point and your two-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the match continues.

The Blitz

This is composed of locking your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your opposer on the bar. e.g., if your opponent rolls an early two and shifts one checker from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then roll a five-five, you are able to play six/one six/one eight/three eight/three. Your opponent is then in big-time trouble since they have two checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have 2 or more anchors in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor spot is a position occupied by at a minimum two of your pieces.) It would be employed when you are extremely behind as it much improves your circumstances. The better areas for anchor spots are near your opponent’s lower points and also on abutting points or with one point separating them. Timing is important for an effective backgame: besides, there’s no reason having two nice anchors and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break up this right away, while your opponent is shifting their checkers home, considering that you don’t have other additional pieces to move! In this case, it is more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you might preserve your position up until your challenger provides you a chance to hit, so it may be a good idea to try and get your challenger to hit them in this case!
