In very simple terms, there are three general strategies employed. You need to be agile enough to hop between techniques quickly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of creating a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at a minimum as thick as you can achieve, to lock in your competitor’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most acceptable procedure at the start of the match. You can build the wall anyplace within your eleven-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the match progresses.

The Blitz

This is composed of locking your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your opposer on the bar. For example, if your opponent tosses an early two and moves one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then roll a five-five, you are able to play 6/1 six/one 8/3 eight/three. Your challenger is then in big-time dire straits seeing that they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have 2 or more anchors in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor is a position occupied by at a minimum 2 of your checkers.) It would be played when you are extremely behind as it much improves your opportunities. The strongest locations for anchor spots are towards your opponent’s lower points and either on adjacent points or with one point separating them. Timing is integral for a powerful backgame: at the end of the day, there is no reason having two nice anchors and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break apart this straight away, while your competitor is shifting their checkers home, because you don’t have any other spare pieces to shift! In this situation, it’s more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you can maintain your position until your opposer gives you an opportunity to hit, so it may be an excellent idea to attempt and get your competitor to hit them in this case!
