In very simple terms, there are three main techniques employed. You want to be able to switch techniques quickly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of creating a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as thick as you might manage, to barricade in your competitor’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most suitable procedure at the start of the game. You can build the wall anywhere within your eleven-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the match advances.

The Blitz

This involves closing your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your opposer on the bar. e.g., if your opposer rolls an early 2 and moves one checker from your one-point to your three-point and you then toss a 5-5, you are able to play six/one six/one 8/3 8/3. Your opposer is now in serious trouble due to the fact that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have two or higher anchors in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor spot is a point consisting of at least 2 of your pieces.) It should be employed when you are extremely behind as this action greatly improves your opportunities. The better places for anchor spots are near your opponent’s lower points and either on adjoining points or with a single point in between. Timing is important for an effectual backgame: after all, there’s no reason having two nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then required to break up this straight away, while your opponent is getting their pieces home, considering that you do not have any other extra pieces to shift! In this situation, it is more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position up till your opposer provides you a chance to hit, so it will be an excellent idea to try and get your challenger to get them in this situation!
