In very general terms, there are 3 fundamental game plans employed. You want to be agile enough to switch strategies instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of assembling a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at least as deep as you can manage, to lock in the opponent’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most suitable course of action at the begining of the game. You can create the wall anywhere within your eleven-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This is comprised of locking your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. For example, if your challenger rolls an early 2 and moves one checker from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you will be able to play six/one six/one 8/3 8/3. Your competitor is now in big-time difficulty since they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have 2 or more checkers in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor spot is a position filled by at least 2 of your checkers.) It needs to be employed when you are decidedly behind as this strategy greatly improves your chances. The best areas for anchors are near your opponent’s smaller points and either on adjoining points or with one point separating them. Timing is integral for an effectual backgame: after all, there’s no reason having two nice anchors and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then required to dismantle this right away, while your challenger is getting their pieces home, taking into account that you don’t have other extra checkers to shift! In this case, it’s better to have pieces on the bar so that you might preserve your position up until your challenger provides you a chance to hit, so it can be a good idea to attempt and get your competitor to hit them in this case!
