In astonishingly general terms, there are 3 fundamental plans used. You want to be agile enough to switch tactics instantly as the course of the game unfolds.
The Blockade
This comprises of building a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you are able to manage, to barricade in your competitor’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable strategy at the begining of the match. You can create the wall anywhere inbetween your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the game continues.
The Blitz
This consists of locking your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your challenger on the bar. i.e., if your competitor rolls an early two and shifts one piece from your one-point to your three-point and you then toss a five-five, you will be able to play six/one 6/1 eight/three 8/3. Your opponent is then in big-time dire straits seeing that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!
The Backgame
This strategy is where you have 2 or more checkers in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor spot is a point filled by at least 2 of your checkers.) It must be used when you are decidedly behind as it much improves your opportunities. The better areas for anchors are close to your opponent’s lower points and either on adjacent points or with one point in between. Timing is crucial for a competent backgame: besides, there’s no point having two nice anchors and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to break up this right away, while your challenger is moving their checkers home, because you do not have any other extra pieces to shift! In this situation, it is more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you might maintain your position until your opponent gives you a chance to hit, so it will be an excellent idea to attempt and get your challenger to get them in this case!
