In astonishingly general terms, there are 3 fundamental strategies used. You want to be agile enough to hop between tactics instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of assembling a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at least as deep as you can achieve, to block in the opponent’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most adequate tactic at the begining of the match. You can build the wall anyplace between your eleven-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the match progresses.

The Blitz

This consists of locking your home board as fast as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. For example, if your competitor rolls an early two and moves one checker from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then roll a five-five, you are able to play six/one 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your opponent is then in big-time trouble seeing that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have 2 or higher checkers in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a point consisting of at a minimum two of your pieces.) It should be used when you are decidedly behind as this strategy much improves your circumstances. The better places for anchors are near your competitor’s smaller points and also on abutting points or with one point in between. Timing is crucial for a competent backgame: besides, there is no point having 2 nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break up this straight away, while your opponent is shifting their checkers home, seeing that you don’t have any other extra pieces to shift! In this situation, it is better to have pieces on the bar so that you might preserve your position until your opposer gives you a chance to hit, so it may be an excellent idea to attempt and get your opposer to hit them in this case!
