In exceptionally simple terms, there are 3 main tactics employed. You must be agile enough to hop between strategies almost instantly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of building a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at a minimum as thick as you can achieve, to barricade in your competitor’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most acceptable course of action at the start of the match. You can create the wall anyplace between your 11-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the match advances.

The Blitz

This is comprised of locking your home board as fast as possible while keeping your opposer on the bar. For example, if your competitor tosses an early two and moves one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then roll a 5-5, you are able to play six/one 6/1 eight/three 8/3. Your opponent is then in serious trouble due to the fact that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have 2 or more checkers in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor is a position consisting of at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It would be played when you are significantly behind as this strategy much improves your chances. The better places for anchor spots are near your competitor’s smaller points and also on adjacent points or with a single point in between. Timing is essential for an effective backgame: after all, there is no reason having 2 nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break apart this right away, while your challenger is moving their checkers home, considering that you do not have any other extra checkers to shift! In this case, it’s more tolerable to have pieces on the bar so that you can maintain your position until your opponent gives you a chance to hit, so it can be a good idea to try and get your challenger to hit them in this situation!
