In very general terms, there are three general plans used. You need to be agile enough to hop between techniques quickly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves assembling a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at a minimum as deep as you might manage, to barricade in your competitor’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most suitable course of action at the begining of the game. You can build the wall anywhere between your 11-point and your 2-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the match progresses.

The Blitz

This involves locking your home board as fast as as you can while keeping your challenger on the bar. e.g., if your opponent rolls an early 2 and shifts one piece from your one-point to your 3-point and you then roll a 5-5, you will be able to play 6/1 6/1 8/3 8/3. Your challenger is now in serious dire straits because they have two pieces on the bar and you have locked half your home board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have two or more anchors in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor spot is a position consisting of at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It would be employed when you are significantly behind as it greatly improves your opportunities. The strongest places for anchors are close to your opponent’s lower points and either on adjoining points or with one point in between. Timing is important for an effectual backgame: besides, there is no point having 2 nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to break apart this straight away, while your competitor is shifting their pieces home, seeing that you do not have other additional checkers to move! In this situation, it is better to have checkers on the bar so that you can maintain your position up till your competitor provides you a chance to hit, so it will be a great idea to try and get your opposer to hit them in this case!
