In very general terms, there are three general plans used. You must be agile enough to hop between strategies instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of assembling a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at least as thick as you can achieve, to block in your opponent’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most adequate procedure at the start of the match. You can build the wall anyplace inbetween your eleven-point and your two-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This involves closing your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your opponent on the bar. For example, if your opposer tosses an early 2 and moves one checker from your one-point to your three-point and you then roll a 5-5, you are able to play 6/1 6/1 8/3 eight/three. Your competitor is then in serious dire straits considering that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have 2 or higher checkers in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor spot is a point consisting of at least two of your pieces.) It must be played when you are decidedly behind as it greatly improves your chances. The better locations for anchors are near your competitor’s smaller points and either on adjacent points or with a single point separating them. Timing is essential for an effectual backgame: at the end of the day, there is no reason having two nice anchors and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then forced to dismantle this right away, while your competitor is moving their checkers home, taking into account that you do not have any other extra pieces to shift! In this case, it is more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you can preserve your position until your challenger provides you a chance to hit, so it will be a wonderful idea to attempt and get your opponent to get them in this situation!
