In extraordinarily simple terms, there are three basic techniques used. You need to be agile enough to switch strategies instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of creating a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at least as deep as you are able to manage, to lock in the opponent’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most suitable strategy at the start of the match. You can assemble the wall anyplace between your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the game progresses.

The Blitz

This involves closing your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your opposer on the bar. i.e., if your competitor rolls an early 2 and moves one piece from your one-point to your 3-point and you then roll a five-five, you are able to play 6/1 six/one 8/3 8/3. Your opponent is then in big-time calamity since they have two checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have 2 or higher checkers in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor is a position consisting of at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It should be used when you are decidedly behind as this strategy much improves your opportunities. The better areas for anchors are towards your competitor’s lower points and either on abutting points or with one point separating them. Timing is important for a competent backgame: after all, there is no point having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to dismantle this straight away, while your competitor is shifting their checkers home, taking into account that you don’t have other extra pieces to move! In this case, it’s more tolerable to have pieces on the bar so that you might maintain your position up till your challenger gives you an opportunity to hit, so it may be an excellent idea to attempt and get your opposer to hit them in this case!
