In astonishingly simple terms, there are 3 fundamental techniques employed. You must be able to hop between techniques almost instantly as the course of the match unfolds.
The Blockade
This involves building a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at least as deep as you might achieve, to lock in your competitor’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most adequate course of action at the begining of the game. You can assemble the wall anywhere within your 11-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the game continues.
The Blitz
This consists of locking your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your competitor on the bar. i.e., if your competitor tosses an early 2 and moves one piece from your one-point to your 3-point and you then roll a five-five, you will be able to play 6/1 six/one 8/3 8/3. Your opposer is now in big-time trouble seeing that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have locked half your home board!
The Backgame
This strategy is where you have 2 or higher checkers in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor is a position consisting of at least two of your pieces.) It would be played when you are decidedly behind as it greatly improves your chances. The better locations for anchors are close to your competitor’s smaller points and also on adjacent points or with one point separating them. Timing is integral for an effective backgame: after all, there’s no reason having 2 nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break down this straight away, while your opposer is moving their checkers home, considering that you don’t have any other additional checkers to move! In this case, it is more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position up till your competitor provides you a chance to hit, so it will be an excellent idea to attempt and get your challenger to get them in this case!
